In Fall of 2018 I was commissioned to work with the International Student Ministry Communications department at InterVarsity Christian Fellowship. They wrote a book on interacting with Hindu international students and asked me to work within InterVarsity’s established brand to design it.

The book was sent to me in Microsoft Word, along with a collection of royalty-free image suggestions. I designed all aspects of the book including the cover, the layout for text and images, and a few custom graphics. I was a last check on editing for clarity and typos, as well. The project took several months to complete, and I’m thrilled with the end result. The sample chapter below illustrates decisions made around pull quotes, chapter headings, image and caption design, and chapter summary boxes.

One major project for the book was redesigning the Timeline of Major Eastern Religious Practices (below, left). The original graphic is an eye-sore, but most of the choices were made with a purpose that needed to remain in a new graphic. The timeline shows the individual strains of Eastern Religions, how they’re similar or different from each other, and which strains fall under which umbrella. The new graphic needed to communicate these same ideas, while looking better, fitting the brand, and fitting on one page in a portrait layout.
